18th President.
Original carte de visite, 2.375” x 3.375”, mounted on stiff ivory card stock, featuring half-bust view of Ulysses S. Grant in uniform. Boldly signed below portrait "U.S. Grant / Lt. Gen. U.S.A." Verso with imprint of “J.E. McClees / Artist / 910 Chestnut Street / Philadelphia”.
Grant's inscription, "Lt. Gen. U.S.A.," establishes the date of this signature as after March 9, 1864. On this day, Lincoln gathered his cabinet "to witness something that had occurred only once before in the history of the republic. As soon as his cabinet arrived, Lincoln presented Ulysses S. Grant with his commission as a lieutenant general. At this point in time, only Washington had risen to that rank in the U.S. Army.”
Some mounting residue on top and verso with mounting strips on verso sides. Gradual overall shading to image area. Bold, dark signature.
