26th President. Nicely rebound copy of Roosevelt’s famous work The Wilderness Hunter, published by G.P. Putnam’s Son, New York and London, 1900. This is a smaller size edition of the book, which was originally published in 1893. It is nicely signed “Theodore Roosevelt” on verso of black & white image of TR in hunting gear across from title page.

This copy originally belonged to Dr. A.J. Woodcock of Illinois with his ownership stamp and a photocopy of a White House letter originally forwarding this book to him signed by the President. There are also notes, presumably in his hand, at the end of the text block in back of book.

The front cover is attached but loose. In a custom slipcase.

When his first wife died in 1884, Theodore Roosevelt withdrew to his cattle ranch in western Dakota. There, he wrote Hunting Trips of a Ranchman (1885) and Thomas Hart Benton (1887) and began work on The Winning of the West (1889). He also penned this account of big-game hunting in the United States, with chapters on hunting lore, hunting with hounds, hunting the grizzly, and hunting from the ranch.
