On the verso, John Calhoun endorses and signs “Pay cannot be allowed in both capacities, JCC”.
Dated February 15, 1821 by filing endorsement.
Very early Houston signed piece.
At this time, John Calhoun was serving as Secretary of War. After serving in the War of 1812, Sam Houston re‑entered federal military service in 1821, becoming a subagent to the Cherokee under the War Department.
