4th President. Signature “Free / James Madison” at top right of partial envelope panel. The panel is addressed to Richard Cutts with a red postmark from “Orange County, VA / July 31”.
Cutts was an early merchant and politician as well as Madison’s brother-in-law.
Orange County, VA was home to Montpelier, the lifelong estate of James Madison.
We believe this cancellation type first appeared in 1835 and as Madison died on June 28, 1836, it would date this signature to 1835. We also believe the partial address portion is in the hand of Dolley Madison.
Affixed to similar size backing.
