15th President. Autograph letter signed “James Buchanan” as US Senator from Pennsylvania, November 26, 1840, sent from Lancaster, PA, to James K. Paulding as Secretary of the Navy, in full:
I have the honor of transmitting to you the enclosed letters from Governor Porter, Judge Blythe, Mr. Henderson formerly a Representative in Congress from the State, & Dr. Henderson & Huntingdon recommending the appointment of Dr. Andrew A. Henderson as an assistant Surgeon in the Navy. No young gentleman could be better recommended & I presume there are few, if any, more deserving. I should feel most grateful should you be able to grant the request.
With address panel on verso, in Buchanan’s hand . We note it’s written “from Mr. Buchanan” at lower left but we cannot verify if that is in Buchanan’s hand.
The recipient was James Kirke Paulding (1778–1860), who served as President Martin Van Buren's Secretary of the Navy from July 1838 until March 1841.
Presented further authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA
