33rd President. Typed letter signed “Harry S Truman” AS PRESIDENT, September 24, 1947, White House Washington stationery, to Congresswoman Margaret Chase Smith. Truman responds to Smith regarding the proposed Passamaquoddy Power Project in Maine and the Florida Ship Canal, two ambitious public works projects he had supported while serving in Congress.
Truman writes that he has "no comments to make on the Passamaquoddy Power Project," but recalls that while in Congress he "did everything I possibly could to promote that project along with the Florida Ship Canal." He notes that neither project had yet been realized, adding, "that may come about sometime in the future."
Fine condition with expected light age toning and a horizontal mailing fold.
Margaret Chase Smith, the recipient of this letter, was then representing Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives and later became the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress.
