Thank you for your letter of July 28. I am delighted that you will be assuming major new responsibilities with the President Ford Committee and, accordingly, I of course accept your resignation as Assistant Secretary of Defense.

During your most recent service with the Department of Defense, you have continued to demonstrate the same dedication and professionalism that characterized your earlier work as my Deputy Press Secretary. As Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, you have done an outstanding job of explaining our defense needs and national security policy to the press and the American public. I wish to express my sincere thanks and deep appreciation for the hard work and great personal integrity you have brought to a most demanding job.

You will be missed at the Department of Defense, but, again, I am personally grateful that you have agreed to undertake challenging new duties as a member of my campaign committee.

There is a James Spence Authentication hologram on the verso of the letter.

In very good condition, light overall and even browning to the paper. Small smudge in last name of signature
