Franklin D. Roosevelt 1942 Typed Letter Signed as President - To Supreme Court Justice Frank Murphy Who Was Serving In The Army Reserve

$2,500.00

32nd President Typed letter signed “FDR” AS PRESIDENT, July 14, 1942, White House Washington stationery, to Frank Murphy who was a Supreme Court Justice at the time but, during the Court’s recess, was serving with the Army Reserve at Fort Benning, Georgia, in full:

I am thrilled at your decision and and the carrying out of it. It is a real inspiration to all Americans.

You are with a grand outfit. I wish I were with you.

Accompanied by original White House mailing envelope addressed to Murphy at Fort Benning but with a stamp showing it was forwarded to a change of address “Due To Official Orders”.

Two horizontal folds, slight smudge to first letter in signature.

Frank Murphy was an American politician, lawyer and jurist from Michigan. He was a Democrat who was named to the Supreme Court by FDR in 1940. He had previously served as United States Attorney General, as the 35th Governor of Michigan and Mayor of Detroit. He also served as the last Governor-General of the Philippines and the first High Commissioner to the Philippines.

This letter, special in its own right, is made more special as Murphy left his post during a Supreme Court recess during World War II to serve three months in the Army Reserve. This letter was sent to him during that period - the only such one we have ever seen.
