34th President. Typed letter signed “Dwight D Eisenhower”, July 23, 1943, “Allied Force Headquarters / Office of the Commander-in Chief” stationery, to a young boy in New Jersey, in full:

Any boy who has spent a year in bed and can still write such a cheerful, fine letter as you wrote to me, can be certain of an answer.

I am delighted to know that you are studying signalling. I have found that any intelligent young man that has some specialized training is always of value in this world - signalling, stenography and typing are three things that will always stand you in good stead.

I have signed my name on the card inclosed in your letter and am returning it herewith.

An amazing letter from General Eisenhower in the thick of World War II. 1943 was a pivotal year for Eisenhower as he was promoted to the temporary rank of full general in February. He completed the invasion of North Africa in May, directed the invasion of Sicily in July, and the invasion of Italy in September. Eisenhower’s rank of Major General was made permanent on August 30. On December 24, Eisenhower was appointed Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Forces to command OPERATION OVERLORD, the invasion of Europe.
