Typed letter signed “Douglas MacArthur” during MacArthur's early years as a junior officer in his first command of Company K, 3rd Engineer Battalion, June 3, 1909, 8×10.5, MacArthur records the tragic drowning of a private, and orders that the men who tried to rescue him be commended for their bravery, in full:
On June 1, 1st Class Private Homer Moore of this Company was drowned while swimming Merritt Lake. On that occasion the Company Commander was witness to the heroic efforts at rescue made by 2nd. Liet. C. L. Sturdevant, Corporal R. P. Bliss, Privates Ray, Scott, Bradford and Dawson.
He therefore desires to take this occasion to publicly commend these men for their action.
This memorandum shall be read to the Company and posted on the bulletin board thereof...

This is among the earliest MacArthur military-related letter we can locate. He was just 29-years-old and had been posted to Fort Leavenworth just a year earlier.
