42nd President. Incredibly rare typed letter signed (TLS) “Bill“, on RARE “William J. Clinton / Route 7, Highway 16 East / Fayetteville, Arkansas 72701” stationery, March 6, 1974, 7.25×10.5, in full:
I just wanted you to know that I will be in Fort Smith two or three days next week and one or two days a week thereafter until the election. I expect to be staying often with Jim and Fran Langston and look forward to talking with you again.
On February 25, 1974, Bill Clinton officially announced his candidacy at the Avanelle Motel in Hot Springs with $10,000 his uncle had given him to get started. The main headquarters was an old house in Fayetteville on College Avenue, with “CLINTON FOR CONGRESS” signs painted on both sides of the house. This is the earliest political letter we have seen and the only one on such letterhead. This letter was written while Clinton was just 28 years-old during his first political campaign – an unsuccessful run for Congress. An important autographed letter from the early stages of one of America’s most successful campaigners.
