Politician, financier, and racehorse owner (1813-1890) who established the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel of the Triple Crown series of American thoroughbred horse racing.
Two-page typed letter signed “August Belmont”, November 22, 1889, sent from “22 Nassau St. / New York,” to the racing editor of The Spirit of the Times newspaper, Walter S. Vosburgh, advocating longer horse races, in full:
Dear Sir:-
In reply to your note of yesterday I have to state as my decided opinion that it would be for the best interests of the Turf if more races of a longer distance could be introduced in the programmes of the different Associations. The short races, which have become so numerous during the last two years, must necessarily, in the end, deteriorate very much the quality of our thoroughbreds and have a general tendency to lessen the interest of the real lovers of a good race horse.
Of note, the Belmont Stakes, run every June at Belmont Park as the last leg of the Triple Crown, is notably the longest of the 3 races and is considered “The Test of the Champion.”
