





Andrew Johnson 1865 Document Signed as President - One Week After Lincoln's Death
17th President. Document signed “Andrew Johnson” AS PRESIDENT, April 22, 1865, 9.75" x 14", one page, document framed to an overall size of 19" x 33". Just one week after the assassiantion of Abraham Lincoln, President Johnson appoints George B. Filson as Postmaster in Steubenville, Ohio.
Signed by Johnson at the lower right, and countersigned by W.F. Curtis as Acting Secretary of State. Paper seal affixed at left edge.

At 7:22 a.m. on April 15, 1865, President Lincoln took his last breathe. Lincoln’s public funeral service occurred on April 19 and the body lay in the Capitol Rotunda on April 20. On April 22, the funeral train carrying Lincoln’s body arrived in Philadelphia, having left DC the day before, en route to Independence Hall. At the same time, the government was printing wanted notices for the capture of the assassination conspirators, who remained at large. This appointment is the earliest Johnson appointment we have handled.
