Harry Truman 1946 Typed Letter Signed as President - To General Hap Arnold

$2,250.00

“I shall always treasure the invitation as a souvenir of the ‘Valley of Many Moons’ and the happiness and enchantment that linger perpetually in such a favored domain”—poetic letter from President Truman to General Hap Arnold, politely declining to attend a centennial celebration for “the establishment of the California Bear Flag Republic”

33rd President.

Typed letter signed “Harry S. Truman” AS PRESIDENT, one page, 7x8.75, White House letterhead, June 5, 1946. Letter to General H. H. ‘Hap’ Arnold, in full:

Some of the romance legendary in the Sonoma Valley comes to me with that very beautiful scroll which I have received from you and Chairman Lyttle.

I wish it were possible for me to accept your kind invitation to attend the one hundredth anniversary of the raising of the Bear Flag and the establishment of the California Bear Flag Republic on Sonoma Plaza June 14, 1846.

As you can readily understand, the unremitting pressure of official duties holds me pretty close to Washington these days. But I shall always treasure the invitation as a souvenir of the ‘Valley of Many Moons’ and the happiness and enchantment that linger perpetually in such a favored domain.

My hearty felicitations and warmest personal greetings to all who gather with you for the commemorative exercises on June fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth.

Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

In fine condition.
