26th President. Typed letter signed “Theodore Roosevelt” AS PRESIDENT, one page of a bifolium, on White House letterhead, 7.25x8.75, October 31, 1903, to Dr. Julius Dreher, Selwood, South Carolina. Roosevelt writes, in part:

It would be a real pleasure to appoint you to a position, for I should feel I was doing good to the public service. But what position do you wish?... Would it not be well for you to come to Washington and yourself find about what positions there are and how soon they would become vacant?"

Roosevelt has made several corrections by hand to the letter.

Dr. Dreher was President of Roanoke College from 1878 to 1903. He later served as Consul to Tahiti, Jamaica, British West Indies, Toronto and various other locations.
