Jimmy Carter Autograph Quote Signed - From His Inaugural Speech and Nobel Prize Speech
39th President. Interesting autograph quote signed by Carter on decorative 8x5x11 stationery. Carter began his 1977 Inaugural Speech with a version of this quote and continued to use it at many speaking engagements after he left office. It reads, in full:
We must accommodate changing times but cling to unchanging principles
Jimmy Carter
When interviewed in Dublin, Ireland in 2013, Carter stated:
But there are basic principles that don’t change. When I was inaugurated President of the US, when I made my Nobel speech when I got the Nobel Peace Prize, I quoted my schoolteacher who had affected me when I was a little boy. She said: “We must accommodate changing times, but cling to unchanging principles.” This has been a philosophy that I have tried to follow.
Carter would sometimes substitute “adjust to” in place of “accommodate” when using this quote but, either way, it was widely used by him throughout his career.
