Jimmy Carter 1986 Autograph Letter Signed – Offering His Admiration for Harry Truman

39th President. Autograph letter signed (ALS) “Jimmy Carter”, April 14, 1986, 6.5×8.5, sent to “Harry S. Truman IV”, in full:

To Harry S. Truman IV

I have said many times that your great granduncle is my favorite president and one of history’s all time great leaders.

He was strong, bold, honest, and a champion of freedom & human rights.

It appears that someone under the name Harry S. Truman IV wrote to both President Jimmy Carter and President Richard Nixon in 1986 on the subject of presidential leadership. Nixon replied with great praise and admiration, in a letter found at the Nixon Library: “Dear Harry, Your letter with regard to ‘Leaders’ was very perceptive. While I had some pretty rough differences with your great uncle & namesake I never considered them to be personal. And on the political side my first vote as a freshman Congressman in 1947 was for the Greek-Turkish aid program which was the basis for the Truman doctrine. I have a warm recollection of my last meeting with him when I presented the piano he had played in the White House for his Presidential library in Independence. He got a kick out of my rather amateurish rendition of the Missouri Waltz! You have a great heritage & bear a proud name. Richard Nixon.”

Of note, we do not believe “Harry Truman IV” actually existed and presume an enterprising autograph collector used the name in hopes of receiving a response such as this.
