Now that our campaign is winding down, I want to thank you for all your support. Your endorsement really gave credibility to our effort.

We came a long, long way, but not far enough; but even in defeat I feel the effort was worth it.

I will spend some time working on our deficit, then Barbara and I head for a rest in Maine.

Barber Conable and Gerry Bemiss join me in thanking you for your support as a member of our National Steering Committee. It really counted.

With a handwritten postscript: "Thanks, pal"

In very good condition, mailing folds.

On May 26, Bush officially dropped out of the Presidential race for the Republican nomination. On November 4, 1980, Bush was elected Vice President under Ronald Reagan.
