21st President. Interesting letter signed “C.A. Arthur” AS VICE PRESIDENT, March 21, 1881, on very uncommon “Vice-President’s Chamber, Washington, D.C.” stationery, in full:

I have your letter of the 15th inst.

Nothing could be more agreeable to me than to have Dr. Armitage as Chaplain of the Senate, and I have, with much pleasure suggested his name, and will wage his appointment as far as it seems proper for me to do so at this time.

Folds, small edge bites, else fine.

Letters from Arthur as VP are most uncommon, with only a few known to exist on the market. Arthur would serve as VP only until September, when he would then ascend to the Presidency upon the death of James Garfield. This example is even more special because of the RARE Vice Presidential stationery.
