41st President.  Typed letter signed (TLS) “George” AS VICE PRESIDENT, March 30, 1982, 4×6 Vice President Washington notecard, to Francis “Reds” Bagnell, in full:

Darn it.  I’m sorry to have missed you on Sunday at the Afghanistan Day Memorial Program.  Next time come up and say hi.

The President has no intention of changing the fundamentals of his program.

Bagnell was an old friend of Bush.  He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame after a stellar career at the University of Pennsylvania.  He was a successful businessman who was appointed to the American Battle Monuments Commission by Presidents Reagan and Bush.
