Dwight D. Eisenhower 1964 Typed Letter Signed – Ike Prepares For Herbert Hoover’s Funeral

Out of stock

34th President.  Typed letter signed (TLS) “Ike E”, (additionally signed “D” after postscript), one page, 7×10, personal DDE stationery from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, October 22, 1964, to Alice Strauss, wife of his former Commerce Secretary Lewis Strauss, in full:

Realizing that you were deeply worried about Lewis’ unexpected trip to New York I was more than amazed to see how wonderfully you carried on as hostess during the social hour following the sale. You made it, by far, the best part of the day.

The sale itself was fun; and I think I learned a few things about them. However there are many others of which I remain completely ignorant — one being the language, or lingo, of an auctioneer.

Thank you very much for your gracious hospitality — and I do hope Lewis has suffered no ill effects from his trip. Affectionately,

Ike has added a typed postscript:

P.S. Wednesday morning I contracted a case of laryngitis and the doctors made me cancel my planned presence at the New York ceremony for President Hoover. I’m now hoping they will allow me to go to the Capitol tomorrow.

Former President Herbert Hoover died on October 20, 1964, in his suite at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City,  just 2 days before Ike sent this letter to the wife of his close friend.  His funeral would take place in NYC on October 22.  Hoover would then lie in state at the US Capitol from October 23-25.

Staple and ink note (unknown hand) at upper left corner. Folds, none touch signatures. Fine condition.
