18th President. Autograph letter signed (ALS) “U.S. Grant”, one page both sides, 5.25×8, November 7, 1877. The letter, written from the “Hotel Bristol Paris”, to Mrs. Pope, in full:
On examination, I find that it is tomorrow evening—Thursday the 8th—that Mrs. Grant and I am engaged for the Italian opera. If the young ladies will be here by eight in the evening we will be happy to escort them to the opera and back to their hotel at the close.
While on their tour around the world, the Grants spent five weeks in Paris, where they met with the French president and saw the Statue of Liberty being constructed. Grant was unimpressed with Paris, later writing of the experience, “I have seen nothing here that would make me want to live in Paris.”
