3rd President. Hand-addressed free frank, measuring 9.75×8 unfolded, with center panel measuring 5×3.5, addressed in Jefferson’s hand to “William Wirt esquire / Richmond” and beautifully franked in the upper left, “free Th: Jefferson” The panel is docketed August 21, 1810.

In very good condition, paper loss from opening at top center, partial red wax seal remains.

William Wirt (November 8, 1772 – February 18, 1834) was an American author and statesman who is credited with turning the position of United States Attorney General into one of influence. He was the longest serving Attorney General in U.S. history.  At the time of this free frank, he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates.
