26th President.  Typed letter signed (TLS) “Theodore Roosevelt”, November 24, 1914, 6.5×7.5, personal stationery, to John Lewis Childs in Floral Park, NY, in full:

I wish I could do what you ask but I do not like to write unless, as our methodist brethren say, ‘I feel it borne in on me,’ and I just cannot undertake such a thing as you request right now.  I am really sorry.

John Lewis Childs (May 13, 1856 – March 6, 1921) was a horticultural businessman and politician who founded Floral Park, New York. In addition to a widespread reputation for being a zealous ornithologist, Childs is also credited with founding the first seed catalog business in the United States.
