26th President. Typed letter signed (TLS) “Theodore Roosevelt” AS PRESIDENT, October 31, 1902, 6.5×7 (sight), White House, Washington stationery, to Fairfax H. Wheelan, President of the University Club of San Francisco, marked “Personal”, in full:

I do not think it would be possible to accept such an invitation. If I go to the Unitarians I would have to go to various other creeds. I want to go to the Harvard Club if by any possibility I can, but more than this it is out of the question for me to take up.

The word “creeds” has been crossed out with two words handwritten by the President himself.

Faint ink blot affecting initial “T” of signature, minor fading to text and signature, mailing fold. Presented matted with portrait and framed.
