The former President has signed and inscribed a bookplate, attached to the first free end paper, to longtime Democratic Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr of Virginia. The handwritten message sits below a printed “Personally autographed for:” and reads:

Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. (1914-2013) represented Virginia in the United States Senate from 1965-1983. He was a conservative Democrat, often disagreeing with core tenets of the Democratic Party, including efforts to desegregate schools. He ran for reelection as an independent in 1970 and won with a majority of the vote. Byrd retired in 1983.
