6th President.  Manuscript letter signed “John Quincy Adams” as Secretary of State under President James Monroe, November 6, 1817, 7.5×9.5, to Thomas Johnston in New York, in full:

I have the pleasure to inform you that permission has been granted to you for going in the Franklin to England, on your way to Calais, your destination.  No time ought to be lost in presenting yourself and the enclosed letter from the Secretary of the Navy, to Captain Stewart at Annapolis, who is authorized by the enclosure to receive you on board.  The ship will sail by the last of next week at furthest.

In good condition, folds and previous separation with archival tape repairs.  Signature remains unaffected and in near perfect condition.  Priced accordingly.
