Composer and bandleader (1854–1932) whose marches take a place among the most familiar works in the history of American music. In 1892, Sousa formed his own band and toured throughout the United States and Europe, in the process becoming one of the best-known musical personalities of the day. In addition to a large body of military and band music, he also composed several operettas, the best known of which is El Capitan.

Typed letter signed “John Philip Sousa”, April 19, 1915, Hotel Sinton Cincinnati stationery, to Mrs. Lewis Perrine, in full:

You know I had a splendid time when I dined at your house while in Trenton.

The portrait of your brother brought back recollections of my Washington life, as a child and the portrait of your father vivified the remembrances of my maturer days, when I was at the head of the Marine Band.

With kindly remembrances to Colonel Perrine, Mr. Stockton, and assurances of my sincerest consideration for you, believe me.

Accompanied by original mailing envelope.  Mailing folds, else fine.
