4th President.  Free franked envelope signed “Free James Madison” at top right.  Addressed in Madison’s hand to “The Reverend Mr Sprague / Albany / New York”.

Full sheet measures 9.5×7.5.

Docketed in another hand at top left, “Orange CH VA / Feby 4” with a pencil notation of 1830.

In very good condition, small piece of original wax seal still present, some staining away from address panel.  Quite attractive overall.

Rev. William Buell Sprague was a minister, author, and the first great American collector of historical documents and pamphlets. He became the first person ever to gather a complete set of the autographs of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
