11th President. Partly-printed vellum document signed (DS) “James K. Polk” AS PRESIDENT, one page, 15.5 x 19.5, August 17, 1848. President Polk appoints “First Lieutenant Lewis G. Arnold of the Army…Captain By Brevet…for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco…”.  Signed at the conclusion by Polk, and countersigned by Secretary of War William L. Marcy. White War Office seal remains affixed to upper left.

In very good to fine condition, with scattered light toning and some staining, folds.
