20th President.  Autograph letter signed (ALS) “J.A. Garfield”, October 21, 1878, 5.5×8.5, “Office of Buckingham, Smith & Co., Men and Boys’ Ready-Made Clothing, Hats, Caps, Etc.” stationery, Flint, Michigan, addressed to “My Dear Brewer“, in full:

I arrived here at 3 p.m. and your letter has just been handed me by the P.M.  I am glad to be in your Dist. and am especially glad to find the people here so enthusiastic in your favor – I hope to hear of your triumph on the 5th prox – as I have no doubt I shall –

I shall take pleasure in telling the people this evening what I think of you.

We have located a speech entitled “The Absurdity of Fiat Money” given by Garfield in Flint, Michigan on October 22, 1878.

A fine handwritten letter.  Minor paper loss at top right with repair, staining at far left side from prior mounting.
