32nd President. Typed letter signed (TLS) “FDR” AS PRESIDENT, March 10, 1945, 8×10.5, to Mrs. James Forrestal, wife of James Forrestal, the Undersecretary of the Navy, upon official “The White House” letterhead, in full:
Dear Jo: — When I was at Hyde Park over the last weekend, I found your very lovely scarves and the handkerchief which you sent me at Christmastime. I do not know what happened. They were not with my Christmas gifts, but maybe one of the grandchildren carried them off and they were only just discovered. The scarves are particularly nice ones and the sample handkerchief is really beautiful. Ever so many thanks for thinking of me. I think Jim looks fine and I envy him his recent trip to the Pacific. My best to you. — Sincerely, FDR
This letter was written on March 10, 1945, and just preceded FDR’s untimely death on April 12, 1945 by barely one month.
