American admiral (1885–1966) who led the Allied naval forces in the Pacific in World War II.  World War II–dated typed letter signed (TLS)  “C. W. Nimitz”, one page, 8 x 10.5, Headquarters of the Commander in Chief letterhead, June 22, 1945, to Eugene Harteloo in Battle Ground, Washington, in full:

Thank you for your letter of June 5 and for your good wishes.  It is heartening to hear from the folks at home who are behind us in our fight against the enemy.

I congratulate you on having three brothers in the armed forces, and not with interest that you expect to join them in less than a year.  I hope you all have an interesting tour of duty and that you will be returned safely to your home when the war is won.
