21st President.  Document signed “C.A. Arthur / Enj. in Chief / Act QM Genl”, October 15, 1861, headed “Assistant Quarter-Master General’s Office”, documenting furnishing 449 rations for 449 men in the “Vols. Engineering.”

At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Arthur was commissioned as a brigadier general and assigned to the New York state militia’s quartermaster department. He would be promoted to quartermaster general of the New York Militia on July 27, 1862, remaining in that post until January 1, 1863.
