16th President.  Partially printed document signed (DS) “Abraham Lincoln” AS PRESIDENT, 19×16.75, Washington, March 24, 1863, countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War, appointing Levi Ward Smith as Hospital Chaplain in the Service of the United States, blue Seal at top left.

Fine, bold signature, faint foxing and few tiny holes at folds, docketing at upper left.

Levi Ward Smith (d.1863) served in the NY State Assembly, 1849-50, and as Adjutant-General for NY Governor Washington Hunt, 1851-52, before becoming a Protestant Episcopal minister. Smith was appointed Hospital Chaplain in March of 1863, taking charge of the military hospital at Germantown, PA, only to perish from disease 9 months later.
