Influential lawyer, jurist, and Harvard Law School professor (1779-1845) who served on the Supreme Court from 1811 to 1845.

Two-page autograph letter signed “Joseph Story”, December 12, 1843, Cambridge, to Charles Sumner, in full:

My Dear Sumner
I have just received your letter. I shall be happy to see Mr. Aldam at my home or at my lectures as may be more convenient and agreeable to him. My lectures are at 11 and 12 o’clock tomorrow (Wednesday) and also at the same hours on Thursday. I lecture at 11 on the conflict of laws, and at 12 on Equity Jurisprudence. If he should not find it convenient to attend my lectures I shall be glad to see him at my house either at tea or in the evening; and I am sorry that Mrs. Story’s present situation will not enable me to proffer more. She is getting better but it is very slowly, and not without some dread of a relapse. Last night was a sad one to her and she was almost without sleep.

Address leaf addressed to Sumner on Court Street in Boston.

Fantastic association between two famous Massachusetts men.

In very good condition, writing on front and back of first leaf.  Some holes, most likely from previous mounting, at edge.
