Typed letter signed “Herbert Hoover,” 7.25×10.5, personal stationery, August 19, 1938. To Paul C. Smith, editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, in full:
I have not made any agreement with the McClure Syndicate. They have been pressing the subject for some months.
I heard a day or so ago that they were going to see how big an area they could cover and then see if they could convince me to undertake it. I assume that this is what they are now doing. I don’t like it.
I would like to see the character of the representation to the Chronicle . Apparently, I will have to take some steps.
Fine condition, mailing folds.
