The first volume is signed and inscribed on the half-title page: “To Franklin D. Murphy with kindest regards and with great appreciation of his help & cooperation on this book. Harry Truman Independence Jan 5, 1956”.
The second volume is signed and inscribed on the half-title page: “To Dr. Franklin D. Murphy from Harry S. Truman 5/5/56”.
Truman has additionally written on each slipcase. One is simply inscribed “Dr. Franklin D. Murphy” while the second is signed and inscribed “To Dr. Franklin D. Murphy from Harry S. Truman”.
This is a first edition, special issue 2 volume set with original blue cloth. This scarce deluxe issue was reserved for the President. Online research indicates these sets are generally offered from $3,000 to over $10,000.
Franklin David Murphy (1916 – 16 June 1994) was an American administrator, educator, and medical doctor. During his life, he served as Chancellor of the University of Kansas (KU) and Chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
The second volume has some toning on signed page from original mailing label that was stored there over time – that label is still present and accompanies the books. In overall very good condition.
