17th President.  Partly-printed document signed (DS) “Andrew Johnson” AS PRESIDENT, one page, January 1, 1866, 16×12, appointing “John A. Rowland of Washington City…to be a member of the Levy Court for the County of Washington, in the District of Columbia…”.  Countersigned by Acting Secretary of State.  Seal at lower left.

The commission was to last for three years. The Washington Levy Court was a body charged with the administration of the ministerial and financial duties of Washington, such as laying out and repairing roads, building bridges, providing poor-houses, laying and collecting the taxes necessary to enable it to discharge these and other duties, and to pay the other expenses of the county.

Uncommon format for Johnson.  Vertical creasing, horizontal folds, else fine.  Great autograph.  Will ship folded along natural folds.
