Following the attacks of September 11, 2001 the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres played on October 7, 2001 – the Rangers’ first home game at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers and Sabres both wore special jerseys with “NEW YORK” diagonally across the front. The night started with a touching pre-game ceremony honoring the men and women in uniform who died trying to save lives in the World Trade Center attacks. The NYPD and FDNY hockey teams lined up on the ice and the Rangers stood between them during their introductions.
Following the game, both sets of jerseys were auctioned off to raise money for the Twin Towers Fund, with the auctions eclipsing $215,000.
Offered here is the jersey worn by Andreas Johansson on this memorable and important night in NY sports history. The size 56 CCM jersey has “NEW YORK” across the chest, with the number “26” on both sleeves. “JOHANSSON” and “26” on back. There is a 9/11 memorial ribbon on the left shoulder. The jersey, for a one-gamer, shows multiple signs of game use including several board burns and puck/stick marks on the sleeves and chest. Johansson scored his first goal as a NY Ranger during their 5-4 overtime win. The jersey has been signed on back, as done for the auction, “Andreas Johansson Love You All.”
Research indicates several players (Messier and Leetch in particular) wore multiple sets during the game. It is believed this is the only jersey worn by Johansson. We cannot find any auction records showing one of these jerseys being offered for sale since the original auction, during which this jersey sold for $4,710.
This jersey was authenticated by The Meigray Group and is accompanied by their paperwork registering the jersey in The MeiGrade System.
