Attractive bowl with 2 handles awarded to the winners of the 1931 Rhode Island State Championship held at Agawam Hunt. The award is engraved as follows:
Rhode Island State Championship
Gledhill – Vines
Inside the award rests a decorative glass bowl.
While we have not found the full results for this tournament, we do know it was held on the grass courts at Agawam Hunt from July 7-12, 1931. Gledhill defeated Vines in the singles final and they teamed up to won the doubles title.
A fantastic piece of tennis memorabilia as Keith Gledhill and Ellsworth Vines would team up to win the Australian Open and US Open in 1932. Vines won the U.S. Open in 1931 for his first singles Grand Slam title. Gledhill won the NCAA Championships in singles 1931 (the second player from Stanford to do so).
Expected wear and tarnish to award with a small chip to the glass bowl. “Sterling” marked on bottom.
