31st governor of Virginia, Secretary of War in President Buchanan’s cabinet (1857-1860), and a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army (1861-1862).

Autograph letter signed “John B. Floyd” AS SECRETARY OF WAR, October 20, 1857, “War Department / Washington”.  Floyd is inquiring after a Mr. Beatty, whom Floyd had directed “be employed as Engineer on the aqueduct. I desire to know whether employment has been given to him; and, if so, where and when.”

Floyd was writing to Montgomery C. Meigs, the engineer in charge of the Washington Aqueduct, begun in 1853 and completed in 1864.
