Product Description

Democratic Party politician from New York. He was the 45th Governor of New York from 1933 to 1942, and represented New York in the United States Senate from 1950 to 1957.

Document signed “Herbert H. Lehman” as Governor of New York, 10×15, headed “State of New York / Executive Chamber”, November 8, 1934, countersigned by James Mahoney as Acting Secretary to the Governor.  Amazing Thanksgiving proclamation, in full:

The fathers of our country facing hardships that in retrospect seem unendurable, established Thanksgiving Day for posterity, a custom that bids to survive for all time.  That custom suggestive of their faith in God enable those stout and courageous people to overcome the obstacles that lay in the pathway of the origination of a new world democracy.  The inspiring example of those intrepid pioneers contributed directly to the upbuilding of the rugged American spirit that through the years has resisted every inclination to yield to exigency, emergency or crisis; a spirit that now demonstrates itself in the determined will of the American people to deal with economic adversity and to adjust their social dislocations.  We have abundant reasons to be thankful, not the least of which is the firm and sure knowledge of Divine favor.

Now, therefore, I, Herbert H. Lehman, Governor of the State of New York, do proclaim, Thursday, November twenty-ninth,

THANKSGIVING DAY

Let us on this day give full expression of our gratitude to Almighty God on whom we depend for life and strength.  Let us fervently acknowledge the blessings we have received throughout the year and ask his continued support and guidance.  Let us particularly manifest the spirit of human fellowship by deeds of kindness and charity, thus reflecting the love of Our Heavenly Father for all mankind.
