General during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 (1751-1829) who served as Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson.

Manuscript letter signed “H Dearborn” as Secretary of War, May 24, 1808, 8×9.5, to David Hogg in the Chickasaw Nation who was the Agent to the Chickasaws, appointing a new Indian translator, in full:

I have received your letter of the 1st ultimo. You will please to appoint Jeremiah K. Love an interpreter, his duties and emoluments to commence when the time for which the present interpreter is engaged shall have expired.

With original address panel intact and free franked “War Department / H Dearborn” at top right.

Part of original red wax seal still present.  Some staining, toning, pencil notations.
