Autograph letter signed “Alexander H. Stephens”, Liberty Hall, Crawfordville, Georgia, April6, 1871. In response to an inquiry from Mr. Henri Gerard of Newburgh, New York, Stephens replied, “Your letter of the 1st Inst. was received this morning; and be assured your request will be cheerfully granted.”
Although he had counseled the South to remain loyal to the Union, Alexander Stephens became Vice President of the Confederate States on February 22, 1862, serving until his arrest on May 11, 1865.
