Grover Cleveland Autograph Letter Signed as New York Governor

22nd and 24th President of the United States. Two-page (front and back of one sheet) autograph letter signed (ALS) "Yours truly, Grover Cleveland",  8x10.5, State of New York Executive Chamber, Albany stationery, July 28, 1884, written to "Isaac G. Perry, Esq. Superintendent", in full:

I desire to call your attention to the provisions of Chapter 312 of the laws of 1884.

This statute declares that 'In every public department and upon all public works of the State of New York, honorably discharged Union soldiers and sailors shall be preferred for appointment and employment.'

This law should be observed by you, as well in the original employment of persons to work on the Capitol, as in the discrimination which you are obliged to make when lack of funds compel you to reduce your force.

Begun in 1867, the New York State Capitol building was completed in 1899, fifteen years after Perry was appointed chief architect of the project.

In very good condition, light soiling, files holes at top, folds, highly legible writing from Cleveland
