2 Calvin Coolidge Typed Letters Signed as President - To Supreme Court Justice George Sutherland
30th President. Pair of Typed letters signed (TLS) "Calvin Coolidge" AS PRESIDENT, The White House, Washington stationery, June 16, 1924, and November 6, 1924, Coolidge writes to George Sutherland as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, in full:
June 16, 1924
I do not know that this letter will reach you, but I want to send you just a line of thanks for your helpful message. I am very grateful that I shall have your support, even if I cannot have the benefit of your advice in political matters. I hope you have a fine trip to Europe.
Less than a week prior to sending this letter, Coolidge won the Republican nomination for President - no doubt prompting Sutherland to send a congratulatory letter.
November 6, 1924
Your note of congratulation is received with the greatest satisfaction, for I know how accurately it reflects the view of one who is able to place a significant estimate upon events of this sort.
I thank you; and I have pleasure in reciprocating all of the kind wishes you so amiably extend to me.
Coolidge had been elected President just 2 days prior to sending this letter.
George Sutherland was one of four appointments to the Supreme Court by President Warren G. Harding, he served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court between 1922 and 1938.
These are the first such communications from a sitting President to a sitting Justice we have handled. In very good condition, previous water damage slightly evident at corners on first letter, with worn but acceptable original White House transmittal envelope. Second letter has rust staining to verso with show through impacting last name in signature, priced accordingly as a group.
