Harry Truman Typed Letter Signed to Former Cabinet Member John Snyder

33rd President.  Typed letter signed (TLS) "Harry S. Truman", April 20, 1960, 7x10.5, personal Independence, Missouri stationery but sent from New York, to Truman's former Secretary of the Treasury John Snyder, in full:

I can't being to tell you how very much I appreciated your letter of the 11th - you are always on the beam.

As you know, Mrs. Truman is here with me and in New York baby sitting while Margaret and Clif are abroad and we are thoroughly enjoying it.

I plan to be in Washington the latter part of this month and I hope I'll have an opportunity to see you.

Every year, from 1946 until Harry Truman's death in 1972, his longtime friend John W. Snyder would write a letter to Truman around the time of the anniversary of Truman's becoming President, April 12, 1945.  The April 11, 1960 letter from Snyder acknowledged by Truman in the first paragraph ("you are always on the beam") recalls the anniversary as Snyder wrote, in part:

"Tomorrow, April 12, will mark the Fifteenth Anniversary of a momentous date in the history of the United States and of the world.

April 12 marks the anniversary of the loss of a great leader and concurrently it marks the anniversary of the introduction of a new leader in domestic and world affairs, who would during the ensuing years make a place for himself in history as an outstanding leader, a great humanitarian, and a patriotic citizen and statesman.

It was a great privilege for me, Mr. President, to have had the opportunity of being associated with you during those momentous days and years between 1945 and 1953....
